  Attorney and Practice Ethics
A distinguishing feature of any profession is a rigorous code of ethics. The code of ethics should not be needed for anything other than to provide guidelines for behavior. The true professional will be willing to stay upright by adhering to the set of ethical principles and standards adopted by his or her profession.

The terms “ethics” and “morals” assumes that there is a “natural law” way to act. Rules of professional conduct pertaining to attorneys are believed by the public to be a guide for ethical conduct. Unfortunately not all attorneys are virtuous, ethical, and moral.

What motivates people to act in ethical ways? In the simplest analysis, it is easy to say that people comply with ethical rules because they are moral or virtuous. Why then must we have laws? Not all people are ethical, but even the tendency among some not to be ethical, rules keeps them “ethical in actions” because if they do not abide by them punishment will be imposed. They fear punishment more than their desire to be unethical. That fear does not keep all people honest, ethical, or moral.

This course will define and describe ethics, differentiate amoral and ethical values, explain the two systems of ethics and discuss philosophers who have contributed to the development of ethics.
