CALIFORNIA MCLE REQUIREMENTS

Every active member of the State Bar must complete a minimum of 25 hours of accredited continuing legal education (CLE) during each MCLE compliance year.

  • CLE Club is an approved California CLE Sponsor. As a result, all CLE Club courses are accepted the California Bar for MCLE credit. All CLE Club courses can be used to satisfy the 25 hours of accredited continuing legal education (CLE) during each MCLE compliance year.
  • At least four hours of the minimum 25-hour requirement must be in the area of legal ethics/professional responsibility; You may take one or more CLE Club ethics courses to complete this requirement.
  • At least one hour of detection/prevention or substance abuse must be completed.
  • At least one hour of elimination of bias in the legal profession should be completed.

MCLE Compliance Year

You must earn 25 general credits over a compliance period of three calendar years. A new admittee is permanently assigned to a compliance group based on the first letter of the last name that s/he lists on his or her registration card (the document you fill out at the time you are sworn in). Attorneys always remain in the same compliance group, even if there is a subsequent last name change.

Period: 2/1/07 - 1/31/10

GROUP 2 (H-M)

Period: 2/1/09 -1/31/12

Deadline: 2/2/2012


GROUP 3 (N-Z)

Period: 2/1/08-1/31/11

Participatory Credit

Participatory credit for watching or listening to an approved education activity recorded on electronic media is available if:

  • The provider has the attorney sign in at the time of the activity and keeps a record of attendance; and
  • The program is approved for participatory credit and
  • The provider gives the attorney a certificate of attendance. Otherwise, an attorney receives self-study credit.

CLE Club courses are approved for participatory credit.


Participatory Credit Calculation

Credit for formal course work is sixty minutes actually spent in an educational activity, less any time for breaks or other activities that lack education content. A credit hour is reported to the nearest quarter hour in decimals.
