COLORADO MCLE REQUIREMENTS
Every active member of the State Bar must complete a minimum of 45 hours of accredited continuing legal education (CLE) during each MCLE compliance period.
- At least seven of these hours must be in legal ethics.
- All newly admitted attorneys (before 7/1/03) must satisfy four of the seven hour legal ethics requirement during their first compliance period by completing the Colorado Bar Association's Mandatory Course on Professionalism.
MCLE Compliance Year
You must earn 45 general credits over a compliance period of three calendar years. The initial compliance period for newly admitted attorneys includes the balance of the year in which they are admitted plus the three subsequent calendar years.
Self Study Credit
You may obtain credit for activity generally referred to as "homestudy" provided the activity:
- Is a structured course of study,
- Is organized by an eligible sponsor,
- Includes the use of thorough, high-quality written materials, available to the attorney completing the course, and
- Incorporates some other educational medium, such as video or audio tapes, correspondence work, testing or individual conferences.
Colorado attorneys can use CLE Club courses to earn 45 general credits over a compliance period of three calendar years, including the 7 hours of legal ethics.
Self Study Credit Calculation
Credit for formal course work shall be awarded on the basis of one (1) unit for each fifty (50) minutes actually spent in attendance at an accredited activity. Credit will not be allowed for any program which in its entirety lasts less than 50 minutes exclusive of question and answer periods.
- Credits for CLE Club courses are based on the actual duration of the course.
- CLE Club does offer courses that are less than 1 hour in duration. Colorado attorneys should not take any course that is listed as less then 1 credit on the CLE Club site.
